Trade Repair and Reporting System
1979 Development of a program in Fortran 77 to carry out Contract Repair Accounting at Duntroon Workshops. Software saved one establishment position and gave greatly improved control over expenditure of trade repair funds. This development was caused by Defence removing 2 out of 3 clerks in an establishment cut. The remaining clerk was unable to cope with the workload. The program consisted of random access text files (advanced for that day!). Printing out of graphs was achieved using a line printer, printing literal characters, rather than, as is done now, using a bit mapped image. The data was entered into the system once per day. The system prevented clerical errors in arithmetic and allowed collation of data into a form required by the higher headquarters in Sydney. Extracting and collating the data by hand and then putting it into the required format used to take one person 4 days of the week to do (using a mechanical typewriter! with photocopiers being a limited and expensive resource.). This system eliminated that task. and so effectively saved two persons worth of work when calculated over an entire month.
